State laws, industry rules, collective agreements, exemptions, and individual employment arrangements may differ. This calculator estimates gross wages before tax withholding and deductions.
How to Use This Calculator

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1Choose between Weekly Total Hours mode or Explicit Regular/Overtime split mode.
  2. 2Enter your total hours worked during the pay period and your base hourly wage.
  3. 3Adjust the overtime threshold (default 40 hours) and overtime rate multiplier (default 1.5× for time-and-a-half).
  4. 4Review your regular pay, overtime pay, and total estimated gross earnings.
Calculation Principle

Overtime Math and Threshold Formulas

Regular hours equal total worked hours up to the weekly threshold. Any hours worked beyond the threshold are classified as overtime hours and multiplied by the overtime wage rate.

Mathematical FormulaOvertime Pay = Overtime Hours × (Hourly Wage × Overtime Multiplier)

How Overtime Pay Is Calculated

Separating Base Hours from Premium Compensation

Under U.S. federal FLSA rules, covered, nonexempt employees generally earn overtime after 40 hours in a workweek at a rate not less than time and one-half their regular rates of pay. 40 hours and 1.5× are common defaults for U.S. federal overtime examples, but applicable rules may differ. State laws, industry rules, collective agreements, exemptions, and individual employment arrangements may differ.

Overtime calculations require splitting your total hours into regular hours (capped at your weekly threshold) and overtime hours, then multiplying each by the applicable wage rate.

Important Note on Taxes and Deductions

Gross Earnings vs Net Paycheck Take-Home Pay

This calculator computes estimated gross earnings before taxes. It does not account for federal or state income tax withholding, Social Security (FICA), Medicare, or voluntary benefit deductions.

Practical Worked Example
48 Weekly Hours at $24.00/hr (1.5× Time-and-a-Half)

An employee logs 48 total hours in one workweek with a 40-hour threshold at $24.00/hour.

Calculation Steps
  • •Regular hours = 40.00. Regular pay = 40 × $24.00 = $960.00.
  • •Overtime hours = 48 - 40 = 8.00 hours.
  • •Overtime rate = $24.00 × 1.5 = $36.00/hour.
  • •Overtime pay = 8 × $36.00 = $288.00.
  • •Total estimated gross earnings = $960.00 + $288.00 = $1,248.00.
Final Calculated ResultRegular Pay: $960.00 · Overtime Pay: $288.00 · Total Gross: $1,248.00.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Frequent Calculation Mistakes

  • ✕Assuming 40 hours is a universal rule everywhere; some jurisdictions (like California) enforce daily overtime beyond 8 hours per day.
  • ✕Treating gross overtime pay as net pay; this calculator does not deduct taxes or withholdings.
Frequently Asked Questions

Questions & Answers

What is time and a half?

Time and a half means receiving 1.5 times your regular hourly wage for overtime hours. For example, if your base pay is $20.00/hour, your time-and-a-half rate is $30.00/hour.

Does this calculator estimate taxes or net paycheck amount?

No. This calculator computes estimated gross earnings based strictly on hours and wage rates. It excludes taxes, social security, health benefits, and payroll deductions.
